The Asheville Insulation SystemIf you've been doing your research online, you've probably discovered the dizzying array of fantastic new insulating choices for your attic. It can be seriously confusing! Should you use spray foam, Icynene, cellulose, denim, cementitious foam, or mineral wool??? What about enclosed and non-vented attics? What about all the chemicals and toxins in modern building materials? It's enough to make you want to skip insulation altogether! Let me tell you, we've been down those roads many, many times. And the results are almost always mixed. Just because someone raved about it, even a neighbor on the same street, doesn't mean it'll work for you, in your home. After many years of testing, sampling, and trying, we at Conservation Pros have developed a system that will work for 90% of the homes in the Asheville area, and put the questions to bed forever, The Asheville Insulation System. The Asheville Insulation problem…
Cast your mind back to the last class you had in physics and remember how heat energy moves. There are three mechanisms, right? Conduction, convection and radiation. Unfortunately, traditional insulation (cellulose, fiberglass and the rest) are only effective against conduction, the movement of energy through a material. Convection, the movement of energy via fluid (aka "air") isn't impeded very well by traditional types of insulation. In fact, go look at your furnace filter. Go ahead, I'll wait… You're back? Good. What's that filter made of? Chances are, it's fiberglass, because fiberglass is superb at allowing a fluid to pass through it. The third mechanism is radiation. The same problem faced by NASA. What has NASA done to combat radiant energy? They use a "radiant barrier", a space-age aluminum foil that blocks 97% of radiant energy. Hey, if it works on the space shuttle, it should work in your attic, right? What you need in your attic is a way to combat all three mechanisms of heat transfer, and that works perfectly in the "mixed-humid climate" of Western North Carolina, without altering the delicate balance of your home's design, however many years ago it was put on paper. Enclosing an attic, for instance, that's been ventilated for 100 years, and spraying foam on the underside of the roof may not be the wisest choice, as it turns out. You might just want to let that attic breathe like it's supposed to. The Asheville Insulation solution…
What your home needs is a complete system that's been specifically crafted by years of experience in Asheville attics, coupled with a keen understanding of the science of buildings. Well, it's finally here. The Asheville Insulation System includes air-sealing, insulation and radiant barrier, allows your attic to be fully ventilated, lets you stop thinking about insulation and return to your previously scheduled life. And, it qualifies you for a fat rebate check from Progress Energy and a tax credit of up to $500 from the IRS. Want to know more? “The job went great thanks to you, and your very professional staff and the subcontractors. They all did an excellent job. And, yes … I NOTICED A REAL DIFFERENCE in comfort and heating needs for the house during this recent cold-snap. Thanks again to all.” Steve S.
